5 Great Restaurants in Angra do Heroismo, Terceira
One thing we didn’t know before visiting the Azores for the first time was how good the food is! We had heard a lot of people talking about how beautiful it is, but we hadn’t heard much about the food – so we were in for a nice surprise.

Almost everywhere we ate, both on São Miguel and Terceira, we found the food to be delicious. And it makes sense, because the Azores are known for farming and agriculture, so a lot of the food you’ll eat here in Terceira is fresh off the farm – and you can taste that!
During our visit to Terceira, we stayed in Angra do Heroismo, so naturally, we tested out a lot of restaurants nearby. In this post, we’ve put together a list of 5 great options we hope you get to try during your time here.

5 Restaurants worth visiting in Angra do Heroismo, Azores
If you love local, delicious, and homey food, then you’re in luck. Both on Sao Miguel and Terceira, we found the food in the Azores is incredibly tasty!
The traditional meals are either based on meat (very beef-heavy) or seafood like limpets, so if you like that, you’ll enjoy the food here.

One of the traditional meals is called “Alcatra”, which is beef that is slow-cooked in a clay pot with red wine and spices. It’s usually served with sweet bread, and it’s very tasty and comforting, and incredibly filling! (To the point where you might have to schedule in a nap after eating it, haha).
Another food you have to try while you’re in Angra do Heroismo is the “Queijada da Dona Amélia”. It’s a traditional cake that was created to honour Queen Amélia when she first visited Terceira in 1901.
For being a relatively small island, the food in Terceira and specifically the capital city of Angra do Heroismo is excellent. Below you can find our top restaurant recommendations for your visit!
We’ve also added a bonus restaurant at the end, which is away from the city that we really enjoyed and think you might, too.
Taberna do Teatro

- Price: Roughly €25-45 per person
- Cuisine: Tapas
- Address: R. da Esperança Nº20, Angra do Heroísmo (Google Maps)
- Reservations: Only necessary on weekend nights
Taberna do Teatro is located in the heart of Angra do Heroismo on a quiet little street. We came here for dinner one night, and the tapas-style food was a nice change-up from all the traditional food we’d been eating on both São Miguel and here on Terceira.
You can either order tapas à la carte and just pick a few options you want, or if you’re having dinner with someone, you can choose the “mixed tapas for 2” option, where you get to select 5 different meals that you can share.
We went for this option, and we shared some spicy peppers, chicken tempura, and a few other meals. All of them were delicious, and it was more than enough to get us full!
Taberna do Teatro is a great option if you like social dining and are looking for some good-quality food at a centrally located restaurant.
q.b. Restaurante

- Price: Roughly €25-35 per person
- Cuisine: Mediterranean cuisine mixed with local
- Address: Caminho do Meio Sao Carlos 50, Angra do Heroísmo (Google Maps)
- Side note: There is a food court downstairs and a restaurant upstairs. We suggest the upstairs!
- Reservations: Reservations are highly recommended. You can book via TheFork app or by sending them a direct message on Instagram.
This cozy little restaurant is located just outside the city centre of Angra do Heroismo and is a great option if you’re looking for a more fine-dining experience in a quieter setting.
We got a set dish with a starter, main, and desert and it was incredible. The waiter introduced all the meals for us and helped us pair them with some nice wine.
They also have a menu you can order from, where it’s a mix of Mediterranean and local cuisine made at a high standard.
q.b. Restaurante is slightly more expensive than some of the other restaurant recommendations in Angra, but the food is great, and it’s worth the visit if you’re looking for a nice atmosphere and good food.
This restaurant is located a 15-minute walk from Terceira Mar Hotel (where we stayed), which was great, so we could enjoy a few drinks at dinner before walking back.
Restaurante Quinta do Martelo

- Price: Roughly €30-50 per person
- Cuisine: Local and traditional dishes from Terceira
- Address: Canada do Martelo, Cantinho, São Francisco das Almas 24 (Google Maps)
- Reservations: If you want the full experience, you need to make a reservation
This was probably one of the most unique experiences we had on Terceira. Quinta do Martelo is more than just a restaurant – it is a unique agritourism experience. (and actually, you can stay here too!)
The restaurant is located a short drive from Angra do Heroismo, and it’s totally worth the trip if you have a car. This dining experience is like you’re in someone’s house, where you’ll try some of the most local food on the island, and both the service and the food is incredible!

The owner, Gilberto, first invited us inside on the ground floor, which is like a shop and museum in one.
Here, he told us about the history of Terceira and Quinta do Martelo while he offered us tastings of different traditional snacks like lupini beans, Azorean cheese, and morcela (blood sausage). He also offered us a traditional drink called traçadinho, which is a mix of wine and soda.
After the experience downstairs, we moved upstairs into the restaurant where the different rooms were decorated in a traditional Terceiran style.
This is where we tried the Alcatra Dish, the Azorean beef stew that we mentioned earlier – and if there’s one place you should try Alcatra, this is it! Highly recommend.
Tasca do Camões

- Price: Roughly €10-25 per person
- Cuisine: Local snacks and specialties + fast food
- Address: R. da Rocha 64, 9700-169 Angra do Heroísmo (Google Maps)
- Reservations: Usually not needed
If you’re looking for something super casual and local, you gotta try at least one “Tasca” while you’re in Portugal. A Tasca is basically a snack bar (or gastropub), and they’re usually very low-key and cater more to locals than to tourists.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try Tasca do Camões since we learnt about it on our last day in Angra, but it came highly recommended from a local we spoke to, who said she goes there all the time.
This pirate-themed snack bar serves burgers, fries, octopus, limpets, and other local specialties at an affordable rate. Even if this style of food isn’t for you, you can stop by Tasca do Camões for a drink and just feel the vibe.
Both indoor and outdoor seating is available, and I can imagine sitting outside on a nice, sunny day with a cold drink would be amazing!
Restaurante Marina Grill

- Price: Roughly €15-40 per person
- Cuisine: Good meat and traditional dishes
- Address: Edifício da Marina de, piso 0, Angra do Heroísmo (Google Maps)
- Reservations: Usually not necessary unless you’re with a big group
Marina Grill Restaurante is located in one of my favourite parts of Angra, right near the ocean. Like the name states, it’s located by the Marina, and it’s easily walkable if you’re staying at a hotel in the city.
Marina Grill is pretty much the opposite of Restaurante Quinta do Martelo, where this is actually quite a new restaurant and has only been around since 2024.
It’s still traditional Azorean in many ways, but also slightly more modern than some of the other restaurants in town. You’ll get to try some amazing meats grilled over charcoal and a variety of seasonal dishes.
The acoustic wasn’t the best, but the delicious food and friendly staff made up for it. All in all, we think it’s a great place if you’re looking for a nice dinner out in the city on one of the nights you’re in Angra!
Bonus: Restaurante Caneta

- Price: Roughly €15-35 per person
- Cuisine: Good meat and traditional dishes
- Address: Rua As Presas 13, Altares (Google Maps)
- Reservations: Usually not needed
This restaurant isn’t actually in Angra, but we’ve decided to include it here as a bonus because it’s a great restaurant to visit if you’re doing a day trip from Angra to the northern side of the island!
Restaurante Caneta has been around since the late 1990s, when it started out as a little snack bar, and has since expanded to seat over 100 people. It’s a cozy restaurant where you can expect to get good wine, meat, and local Azorean dishes.
It’s a great lunch spot on the north side of the island. If you’re in the area, it’s also worth visiting Materramenta Winery (unique wine process with volcanic stone) as well.
