From Fátima, you’re also super close to one of the “7 Wonders of Portugal”, the Batalha Monastery in Batalha. And you are also just a short drive away from the famous and unique Mira de Aire Caves.

Since you landed on this post, you’re probably looking for the most convenient way to get from Lisbon to Fatima as there are quite a few options.

4 best ways to get from Lisbon to Fátima

Lisbon to Fátima is definitely one of the more underrated day trips from Lisbon. There’s so much to see in and near Fátima, and if you have the time it’s worth spending a few days in the area. It will give you time to explore the city and to do a few day trips from Fátima.

Luckily it’s really easy to get from Lisbon to Fatima so no matter when you plan on going you will easily be able to either rent a car, hop on a bus, or even rent a campervan in Portugal like we did. If you are travelling by campervan there are also plenty of great camping options and campsites in this central part of Portugal.

Tons of people end up travelling to see the Mira de Aire Caves or the Monastery in Batalha so Fátima is actually perfectly located in the center of the two.

Let’s get right into all the different options on how to get between Lisbon and Fátima. In this post, you will find the different options, ticket prices, links to sites where you can book from, and reasons why we recommend each option.

Lisbon to Fátima on toll roads.

Lisbon to Fátima by bus

Average price: €11 one way ($12.5)
Average time: 1.5 to 2 hours
Convenience: 4.5/5
Where to book: Omio

The bus is definitely the best option if you’re looking at taking public transportation to Fátima. The convenient thing about the bus is that it leaves from the Lisbon Oriente bus terminal which is one of the stops on the pink metro line in Lisbon (the same metro that goes to the airport). So it’s easy to get to from anywhere in Lisbon basically.

The buses leave every few hours from Lisbon to Fatima so you don’t have to book it too far in advance. The prices are reasonable for the distance since it is roughly a 2-hour trip.

You’ll get dropped off right in the heart of town, so it doesn’t get more convenient than that if you want to explore Fátima. If we weren’t travelling Portugal by Van then this would be our first choice.

Lisbon to Fátima by rental car

Average price: Anywhere from $10-50 a day + gas
Average time: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
Convenience: 4/5
Where to book: Rentalcars.com

The price for public transport is quite cheap in Portugal, so we really favour the bus and train over renting cars, especially if you’re just going for a day trip. For longer periods of time though, the car is totally worth it.

Depending on which way you take to Fátima you may end up paying toll fees for using the highway. It’s quite normal in Portugal. Thankfully, Google Maps has different routes based on whether you want to pay for the toll fees or not.

Going to Fátima on the toll roads will take you 1.5 hours but will cost you extra in fees. The distance is 128 km if you go on the toll roads. If you take the free roads, it will take you 2.5 hours but there will be no additional fees. The distance is 145 km so with the time spent + the extra kilometers, the price might end up being the same once you pay for gas.

If you want to rent a car, we recommend using Rentalcars.com and then picking it up from the Lisbon Airport. This is usually the cheapest option. We like using Rentalcars.com because it compares the different rental companies and shows you the cheapest and best options!

Another good tip is that the further you book the car rental in advance the more likely you are to get a better discount (or if you book very last minute during the off-season, but this can be risky)!

One last thing to keep in mind is the fact that most rental calls in Portugal will be manual. So if you don’t know how to drive a stick, make sure to practice up a bit beforehand.

Lisbon to Fátima by Campervan rental

Average price: Depends on the season (price guide here)
Average time: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
Convenience: 5/5
Where to book: PortugalByVan

If you get the opportunity to travel Portugal by Van then DO IT! It’s a great way to see the country and a convenient way to stay in one spot for multiple days at a time. Portugal is also super camping friendly and there are tons of great campsites all over the country.

If you pick up your campervan in Lisbon you can drive directly to Fátima or make some stops along the way such as in Santarem, Torres Novas, and Mira de Aire.

This option, of course, doesn’t work if you’re just planning a day trip from Lisbon to Fátima. But if you plan to explore the country and explore the coast then definitely consider taking a Portugal By Van.

We had the best time in our little house on wheels and loved travelling around the country this way. We did it without paying for a single toll road and took some very interesting routes around the country!

Lisbon to Fátima by rideshare

Average price: €5.5 to €9 one way (prices vary depending on the driver)
Average time: Just under 2 hours
Convenience: 4/5
Where to book: Blablacar

If you’re in the mood to make a new friend or if you want someone to chat with, a rideshare can be a good option. We’ve used Blablacar a few times in Prague and the Czech Republic but haven’t taken one in Portugal before. We have, however, hitchhiked around the Algarve and the Portuguese people are so friendly to pick you up!

It’s not super consistent with drivers from Lisbon to Fátime but it doesn’t hurt to check. We’ve found that if you go on a Saturday or Sunday and if you’re flexible with the departure time then you’ve got better luck finding a ride.

One of the benefits of a rideshare is that it’s quite cheap and you can usually meet friendly people. If you’re feeling a little adventurous and comfortable driving with a stranger then give it a go.
