This is something we’ve been looking forward to sharing since we started the process of making this trip possible! Back in the spring of 2022 we spent two months coworking and hiking around Madeira and very quickly fell in love with this Portuguese island.
From all the feedback from friends, family, and our online community we realized that we had to create something to bring a bunch of us together to explore and hike around Madeira.
That’s when Trail to Adventures came to life! And now we’re going to be hosting a 12 day hiking trip in Madeira (on February 8th to 19th, 2023) where we’ll explore some of the most iconic and beautiful hikes on the island.
We’ll be doing hikes like Levada 25 Fontes, Pico do Arieiro, and some other ones that we absolutely love and that are highly recommended by professional hiking guides on the island!
What is the hiking trip in Madeira all about
Basically, our goal is to bring like-minded outdoor adventure lovers together under one roof to explore the beauty of Madeira. That’s why we found a place that can house all 14 of us (Jo and I + 12 of you) where we can relax after hiking and eat yummy food together prepared by a local chef.
The main goal of the hiking trip is to see and hike around different parts of Madeira and to reconnect with nature. So with 6 hikes, we’ll get a good feel for what the island is all about. There are more than 6 amazing hikes to do in Madeira since the island is filled with walking trails all around it but we’ve planned 6 of the best hikes to really take in what the island has to offer.
Of course, hiking and seeing the nature around Madeira is the highlight but that’s not all! We also want to sprinkle some other fun activities. We’ll spend an afternoon searching for dolphins, and another afternoon sipping on wine at a local vineyard.
Lastly, we’ll spend a day exploring Funchal and a few other spontaneous adventures. This is something we’ve been looking forward to doing for so long so the fact that it’s coming to life and you might be there to join us puts the biggest smile on our faces!
Can I come on the hiking trip to Madeira?
Yes, the hiking trip to Madeira is for anyone who wants to hike and experience the beauty of Madeira. There are no age restrictions and it’s for absolutely anyone who wants to hike and be around other like-minded people.
We will go on a hike roughly every second day but the hikes around here aren’t like hiking in the Rocky Mountains or the Alps in Europe. A few hikes are a little challenging but the majority of the hikes are more walking trails than anything!
So if you want to come and hike around, explore Madeira, try out local wine, and hopefully see dolphins then you can absolutely come on our trip to Madeira!

How hard is hiking in Madeira?
All the hikes we go on are going to be well-marked and easy to walk on trails. When we say the hikes are for all ages we mean it. Kids and grandparents can do the hikes we’re going to go on with the exception of one.
This hiking trip is not meant to be for advanced hikers but rather for day hikers who love being active out in nature and want to explore the island.
I’m sure your legs may get tired during the trip but the hiking itself is very relaxed and fun! We’re definitely going to take our time, enjoy the views, and snap a few (read: a ton of) pictures!
Is everything included?
Everything we mentioned above is included in the price of the trip. From airport pickup to all the meals and tours we’re going to do – it is all included. Most meals are cooked at our villa by a local chef but a few meals we may eat out. These meals are included in the tour price as well!
The only thing you’ll have to spend money on are souvenirs, additional alcohol, and if you plan to do any extra activities that aren’t included in the tour.
What if I have food allergies or special dietary needs?
We will have a personal chef at the villa that will cater to everyone’s dietary needs so if there’s any food you can’t eat or don’t like we will make sure to not serve it to you! The meals can be prepared veggie & vegan as well.
Are flights included?
Flights are not included but we can definitely assist you in trying to find the most convenient and affordable flights from your home to Madeira. Thankfully, during February flights are usually quite a bit cheaper than other times of the year, so hopefully, you can get a nice deal.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, we recommend getting the SafetyWing nomad insurance if you don’t have one already. They’re affordable and you can do it all online within a few minutes. Another good option is to check through your credit card or through your bank as well.
What are the dates for the hiking trip?
The trip runs from February 8th to 19th, 2023! The first day is a relaxed day where everyone arrives and then we have 10 days with a jam-packed schedule. The last day is for goodbyes, hugs, and taking in one last view of the beautiful island!
