5 Delicious Restaurants in Ponta Delgada, Azores
One thing that completely surprised us about the Azores is how good the food is around the island. We knew the nature would be stunning and that São Miguel is full of adventure and kind people – but we had no idea the food on the island would be as good as it was!

We actually have friends who visited a few years before us who said they absolutely loved it, but that they were struggling to find good food. We found the problem to be the complete opposite… We found so many good places that we didn’t have time to visit them all!
There are so many delicious and unique restaurants around the island, but this post is specifically about the best restaurants in Ponta Delgada. It’s the capital city of São Miguel Island, so there’s plenty of options to choose from – but after our visit, we’ve narrowed them down to what we think are the top 5!

5 of the best restaurants in Ponta Delgada, Azores
The Azores are famous for their beef, and since the islands are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s probably no surprise that most meals you’ll find on the menu will be either beef-based, fish, or seafood.
Some of the most famous foods that São Miguel is known for are Lapas (limpets), Bolo Lêvedo bread (which, if you’ve been to Madeira, looks a lot like Bolo do Caco, but it’s a lot sweeter than that), and Cozido das Furnas (which you should really try in the town of Furnas).
If you love local, flavourful food, you’re in luck because Ponta Delgada has both! For being a small city, the restaurant scene in Ponta Delgada is very good.

A Tasca

- Price: Roughly €15-25 per person
- Cuisine: Local Portuguese cuisine
- Address: R. do Aljube 16, 9500-018 Ponta Delgada (Google Maps)
- Reservations: A Tasca does not take reservations, so try to come before 6-7 pm to avoid long lines
It’s only fair that A Tasca makes it to the top of the list of best restaurants in Ponta Delgada because this may have been our favourite restaurant on the whole trip.
A Tasca is truly one of those hole-in-the-wall gems that you stumble upon and remember forever. For us, it was a combination of everything from the “Newsparer Menu”, where you can also read the story behind the restaurant, to the friendliness of the service.
The atmosphere was so happy and full of life, the volume a bit louder (but in a good way), and each meal we had was better than the previous one.
We ordered a ton of small dishes here, and I almost don’t remember everything we ate – but we do remember how amazing it all tasted, and just how amazing this experience was.
One of the highlights was that we couldn’t decide on which dessert we wanted, so our waitress ended up giving us 4 half desserts to share just so we could try them all without overeating. 10/10 would recommend!
Cais da Sardinha

- Price: Roughly €15-25 per person
- Cuisine: Local Portuguese and seafood cuisine
- Address: Av. Infante Dom Henrique, 9500-768 Ponta Delgada (Google Maps)
- Reservations: Can be made via email, which you can find on their website
The restaurant Cais da Sardinha is another great place for a local meal. It’s located at an old pier where you’ll have a great waterfront view.
If you’re looking for fish and seafood, this is the place to go! We had prawns in garlic sauce as a starter and the traditional Tuna Bitoque (a tuna steak with a fried egg), and it was really nice.
Personally, we think the ambiance, location, and charm of the restaurant are slightly better than the food, but the traditional dishes are still nice to try. If you’re looking for a romantic dinner by the water, Cais da Sardinha is a good option!
Also, if you’re looking for a bit of fun and dancing, they do have a DJ and some live music on the terrace during the summer months. It’s a great way to spend a summer night in Ponta Delgada.
Anfiteatro Lounge Restaurant

- Price: Roughly €25-50 per person
- Cuisine: Local Azorean food with a twist
- Address: R. Hintze Ribeiro 67, 9500-049 Ponta Delgada (Google Maps)
- Reservations: Can be made via email, which can be found on their website
We were absolutely blown away by this gastronomy experience at the Anfiteatro Lounge right next to the Whale Watching tours by the harbour in Ponta Delgada.
The restaurant belongs to the Azores School of Tourism Training, and they sometimes even host big gastronomy events in the building. You can tell by the presentation and the quality of food that they are really proud of what they do.
One thing I absolutely loved about the Anfiteatro restaurant is that they stick to the roots of the Azores while adding a magical twist.
For example, we had pork belly croquettes with sriracha mayonnaise for starters, eggplant with a Japanese twist as our main, and a sweet potato and pumpkin ice cream for dessert.
A little piece of advice: don’t skip out on the dessert!
The majority of the restaurants in Ponta Delgada and the island cook quite traditional food, which makes a place like this quite unique. And the best part is that they have a nice variety of food for everyone with both meat, fish, and vegetarian options. Highly recommend!
Escuna Restaurant Ponta Delgada

- Price: Roughly €25-40 per person
- Cuisine: Local Azorian dishes
- Address: Av. João Bosco Mota Amaral n.º1 767, 9500-767 Ponta Delgada (Google Maps)
- Reservations: Usually not needed
This restaurant is beautifully located inside the Hotel Marina Atlantico (which is the hotel we stayed at in Ponta Delgada). From the restaurant, you get an incredible view overlooking the pier and the ocean!
One thing that I love about Escuna Restaurant is that they have both a buffet option and an à la carte option. I was quite hungry from a long day of travelling, so I went with the buffet option while Josie went with a dish from their menu.
Even if you’re not staying at the Marina Atlantico Hotel, it’s worth coming for dinner here. If you want to keep the evening going, there’s a bar next door – and a few times a week, they have musicians come play live music there as well.
The ambiance is great, and whether you go with the buffet or the à la carte menu, you can expect delicious Azorian food, made with delicious local ingredients! It’s definitely worth adding to the list of places to eat here in the city.
Restaurante Gastronomo

- Price: Roughly €25-40 per person
- Cuisine: Local Azorian dishes
- Address: Rua da Boa Nova São Pedro, 9500-296 Ponta Delgada (Google Maps)
- Reservations: It’s best if you make a reservation. Stop by the restaurant or give them a call.
This is the only restaurant on the list we didn’t get a chance to eat at, but wish we had. Gastronomo Restaurant is one of the top-rated restaurants in Ponta Delgada, and it is known for having some absolutely incredible food!
A few locals we talked to even mentioned going to the Gastronomic Restaurant, but we simply ran out of time. A good excuse to come back in the future, I guess! 😉
One reason we really want to go back and eat here is that everyone says that – on top of the food being amazing – both the service and atmosphere are really good as well, and that’s something we really appreciate and value when deciding which restaurants to eat at.
So please go there for us since we haven’t had the chance (yet) and let us know how good it is! 🤭

Bonus: Go on a food tour
While this isn’t a restaurant as such, there are some really good food tours available from Ponta Delgada. One option is this Food and Wine Tour around São Miguel Island (with pickup available from Ponta Delgada as well as other parts of the island).
On this food & wine tour, your guide will take you to a wine estate with wine tasting, a pineapple plantation, a liqueur factory, and a local restaurant where you will get a buffet lunch, drink, and coffee.
Another fun option is this walking food tour in Ponta Delgada, where you start at the local market before walking around the city and getting to know both the local culture and cuisine.
On this 3-hour tour, you’ll get to try out some Azorean pineapple, delicious local cheeses (the Azores are famous for their cheese), and then the tour finishes at a local restaurant, food & drink included!
