5 Unique Hotels in Bohinj

Lake Bohinj on a moody day

Even though you’re more than likely going to spend a lot of your time outdoors (exploring Lake Bohinj and hiking around the Triglav National Park) it’s nice to have a cozy place to come back to in the evening.

One thing we really appreciate about Slovenia is how they try to preserve the beauty of their country and protect nature. They do this in many different ways such as charging a small fee to hike. Mostly on the more popular trails to maintain them and having free shuttle buses so fewer people drive. Slovenia really tries to do its part to let people enjoy the outdoors in a sustainable way.

That’s also why the Bohinj hotels and accommodations that support eco-friendly behaviour and do things to help out the area in an eco-friendly way are at the top of the list of places to stay here. In this post, we’ve highlighted if each hotel is Sustainability Independent Certified or not.

At the end of the day, we want people to be able to continue to visit Lake Bohinj. To see it at its absolute best. And the way we do that is by helping and supporting companies and small businesses that believe in sustainability and take action that helps the environment.

So let’s explore 5 Bohinj hotels and accommodations that can make for an awesome trip to this mountain-surrounded lake deep in the Triglav National Park!

This technically isn’t a hotel but it is worth adding to the list! Located in Stara Fužina right next to Bohinj you’re just a 4-minute drive from the lake. The Old Mill House is where we stayed when we went to Bohinj the first time. We loved it because of how authentic it was. It is run by a local family that’s been in Stara Fuzina for multiple generations and you can still see the original mill!

The family has completely renovated the home and has two different accommodations for rent. The first is the main floor of their home which is perfect for a family of four. You have the entire place to yourself including your own entrance door. So you’re not sharing with the family – but they do live upstairs!

The second accommodation is 10 meters away across the street and it’s perfect for a couple or a solo traveller. This is the one you see in the pictures above. It’s smaller and also cheaper so it’s nice that you can choose between the two depending on what kind of trip you’re on.

If you want a truly local experience, this is the place to stay. On our first day, the owner gave us a little tour of the place and shared some facts about The Old Mill House. We had a cup of coffee with them and they showed us around the property. They also taught us a few things about how things were in the past. They even showed us a few pictures of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents!

After the little sit-down with the owners, you’ll have the place to yourself and time to explore Lake Bohinj. There are also a few hikes like Vogar Viewpoint of Mostnica Gorge to Vaye Waterfall that both actually start from Stara Fuzina. You can walk straight out your door and on the trailhead in just a few minutes.

When you think of an off-the-beaten-path way to explore Slovenia and Lake Bohinj this is the way. Staying (privately) with a local family and learning about all the hidden gems in the area.

What makes the Old Mill House unique?
This place is family owned and run by the original owners for generations.
The owners still live upstairs and have recently completely renovated the place.
The Old Mill is still connected to the house.

⭐️ Rating: 8.5
🌿 Sustainability? Sustainability Independent Certified

Penzion Rožic may not have all the glamour and glitter that a lot of the newer Bohinj hotels have but what it has instead is history and character. The hotel Penzion Rožic has been run by the same family for over 20 years and has maintained its wonderful reputation because of it.

You’ll be greeted with delicious breakfasts made from all sorts of local ingredients from the farmers in and around Bohinj. From local eggs to homemade strawberry jams and delicious home-baked pastries it’s a nice way to start every morning before exploring the local area.

Another thing one can appreciate about Penzion Rožic is that they are also sustainability independently certified so that’s just one more reason to support this 30-bedroom family-run pension.

On top of all that, what really makes it stand out is the location and how close you are to Lake Bohinj. Not many of the Bohinj Hotels are this close to the actual lake. You can easily grab one of their canoes and go explore the lake or even grab a kayak and head down the Sava Bohinjka River.

Hiša Križaj is another family-run and owned accommodation in Bohinj. You can probably tell by now that Bohinj is a much more local place to visit in Slovenia without any big hotel chains or anything like that which we absolutely love. Most of the accommodations in Bohinj aren’t actually hotels but more beautiful family-owned pensions or apartments like Hiša Križaj.

With their very modern mountain style, you’ll feel right at home at Hiša Križaj in their welcoming apartments. They have multiple apartments in different sizes so you can pick the size that fits you depending on how big of a group you’re travelling with.

With a little grill and lounge area outside you don’t have to go far to enjoy the outdoors and the incredible views of the Julian Alps right out your front door!

Restaurants and grocery stores are within walking distance as well. So if you want to buy some local ingredients and cook at home or visit one of the local restaurants and try some delicious food you can do that as well.
