This island of Madeira isn’t known for producing coffee the same way mainland Portugal does. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get amazing coffee on the island. As Funchal grows in popularity, more and more cafes in Funchal are starting to pop up and we’re here for it!

We love enjoying a nice cup of coffee outside in the Madeiran sun to warm you up and feel energized. In this post, you will find some of our favourite cafes in the capital of Madeira. Most of the cafes in this post are also laptop friendly so if you’re looking for somewhere to get some work while enjoying a nice coffee in Funchal then these cafes will do the trick.

Most of these cafes are within walking distance from downtown Funchal and a few are a bit further away but totally worth the trip to have some of Funchal’s best coffee.

7 of the best coffee shops and cafes in Funchal

These coffee shops are what kept us alive during our two months in Funchal! They give you the energy to get work done and hike all the mountains around Madeira. We pick our cafes by coffee, customer service, and ability to take our laptops and work from the cafes. All 7 of these cafes in Funchal tick most or all of those boxes.

The fun thing is that most of these cafes in Funchal are actually quite unique and different so it doesn’t just feel like you’re going to the same cafe again and again. You can switch it up between the few and see which one you like the most!

Now it’s time to enjoy a good cup of coffee in Funchal and take in the good vibes and fun atmosphere this island has.

Maia Coffee Shop

PC: Maia Coffee Shop

Maia Coffee Shop is one of the new coffee shops in Funchal and has really taken the “new kid on the block” approach. They’re a bit more of a trendy and hip coffee shop. You’ll have the locals that stop by for their quick espresso and the tourists that sit outside and enjoy a nice cappuccino in the sun.

Maia Coffee Shop doesn’t have much room to work from if you’re planning on bringing out your laptop. What we would often do is get our coffee to go and then bring it to Cowork Funchal where we’d get our work done.

It’s located pretty central in downtown Funchal and is easy to get to! If you’re lucky you’ll hopefully have a nice table in the sun! If you’re looking for a cafe with good coffee in Funchal, friendly staff, and a good atmosphere then this is the place.

Art Food Corner

When it comes to amazing coffee, smoothies, and literally any food on their menu, Art Food Corner takes the cake! They’re an amazing little cafe downtown Funchal close to the ocean where they serve the best of the best of everything.

There are times we bring our laptops and get some work done while enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Other times we go with friends and indulge in all their delicious fresh food.

The staff is really nice, it’s at a great location, and it has an all-around fun vibe. If the name of the cafe didn’t give it away it’s quite a hip and artsy little place. Once you’ve enjoyed your drink you can check out the art studio connected to it.

Art Food Corner is a great place to go if you’re looking for a nice coffee or just want some yummy fresh food. It’s one of our favourite places in Funchal and we hope it becomes one of your favourites too!

Prima Caju

This is the Insta-friendly cafe in Funchal to visit if you’re looking for cool decor, yummy food, and good coffee. Sometimes we’d go during quiet hours and bring our laptops and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

Other times it’s nice to just go grab some yummy food. They have a wide variety of healthy bowls, soups, smoothies, and of course coffee! It does get busy though so if you plan to go for lunch then maybe make a reservation or go early.

Prima Caju is laptop friendly but more during their quiet hours. It’s best to go before lunch or after lunch when it’s a little less busy.

Land Food & Coffee

Land Food & Coffee isn’t exactly in downtown Funchal but more up in the hills in Monte overlooking Funchal. The reason it’s on this list is because it’s too good to pass up and you can easily get up to Monte if you want a quick break from Funchal and want a taste of Land Food & Coffee.

You can either take a Bolt for a few Euros from downtown Funchal or else you can take the cable car (Teleférico) from downtown which will drop you off right next to Land Food & Coffee. Alternatively, you can take the adventurous way up.

The adventurous way is by hiking the local Levada do Bom Sucesso: A Levada trail that takes you from Funchal all the way up to Monte where you can find this amazing cafe.

Once you’re there you can expect some delicious food and coffee. They also usually have a bunch of different sweets and desserts on their menu so if you’re like us and love sweets you’ll be in heaven.

They have awesome food from breakfast to lunch and there’s plenty of room both inside and outside. So feel free to bring your laptop and get some work done if you feel like being productive. Land Food & Coffee overlooks all of Funchal and on a clear day the views are incredible!

And did we mention that their coffee beans are roasted locally in Monte?

Greenhouse Coffee Roasters

Another unique cafe in Funchal (in Monte) is Greenhouse Coffee Roasters. This cafe is actually only a short walk from Land Food & Coffee. The name does give it away but Greenhouse Coffee Roasters is actually set up in a greenhouse with plants and flora everywhere. This coffee shop is located inside the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, so if you want to check them out, you just have to give them a call on +351 291 644 284.

The vibe is very relaxed and chilled and very fitting for Madeira. Especially since you have these parks and viewpoints in Monte right next to the cafe. The setting couldn’t be any better! A fun thing to do in Monte is to go explore the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens after you’ve checked out Greenhouse Coffee Roasters.

If you’re feeling adventurous you can hike up the same Levada do Bom Sucesso trail and get to the Greenhouse Coffee Roasters or else take the cable car or a Bolt!

Just like Land Food & Coffee, Greenhouse Coffee Roasters also get their beans from Odd Coffee Roastery which is local to Monte.

Loja do Chá

Loja do Chá is a tea house in Funchal and they have the craziest variety of tea you could ever imagine. Don’t worry, they have coffee too! 😉

Loja do Chá is located right in the heart of Funchal and has an awesome outdoor seating area where you can relax and enjoy the sun. There’s usually some live music playing outside too which is really fun.

If you’re not in the mood for sitting outside you can go inside the beautiful three-story high tea house and find a spot to enjoy your coffee, tea, and hopefully yummy dessert!

We’ve brought our laptops a few times to Loja do Chá and they didn’t mind at all. The wifi isn’t very strong outside but inside it works completely fine! There’s plenty of seating at the tea house so you don’t feel like you’re taking up too much room.

We love our coffee but since they specialize in tea we decided to try out a few of their blends and they paired so well with all the yummy treats they serve! Enjoy this cool tea house!

Boutique Cafe Lido

Boutique Cafe Lido is in the Lido district of Funchal which is the more modern and touristy part of the city. Other than coffee, this cafe offers awesome breakfast and brunch – and one of the highlights of Boutique Cafe Lido is its location.

The seating outside is limited but if you can get a spot there, you’ll have a great view! Otherwise, you can enjoy Boutique Cafe Lido from inside and take in the smell of the delicious pastries and cakes.

Boutique Cafe Lido isn’t the best cafe for working but if you’re looking for a cafe in Funchal that will have good sweets and coffee then this is a great option!

The Lido area of Funchal might seem like a bit far from downtown Funchal but it’s a nice walk. There are also plenty of buses that go back and forth every 15 minutes or so.

    Thank you so much Mark.

The café in the Monte gardens now has another branch in Funchal town. It’s called Arbor & is located on Av. do Infante. Much handier than the Monte branch and no garden admission fee.

    Thanks again

Hi I had the best coffee I’ve had in Maderia today, since we arrived on Wed, at The Studio Tavira St Funchal. The machiato was 2.5€ so not cheap but it was by far the best I’ve had, delicious, we were in the Algarve in Nov for 3 weeks too and I’d say it was better than any we had there. They know what they’re doing and are proud of what they serve, quite rightly. We are coffee freaks and seek out the best wherever we go around the world. Please try this and add it to your list.

      Hello Linda,

We will be heading back to Madeira in the next few months and will let you know as soon as we try out this spot. Thank you for the recommendation.
