Lisbon to Óbidos by train

Average price: €9 one way
Average time: Roughly 2.5 hours one way
Convenience: 4/5
Where to book: Omio

Taking the train from Lisbon to Óbidos is definitely one of the more convenient and cheapest ways to get there. The train only runs a few times a day so you have to plan in advance a little bit. You can easily hop on a train in the morning and take one in the evening and still have a full day in Óbidos and have time for all the fun things there are to do inside the castle walls.

The only downside of the train ride is that it is over 2 hours each way but still worth it in our opinion. Especially since the train takes you through the beautiful Portuguese countryside that you get to enjoy. So if you’re going for a day or two you can easily hop on the train and still make the most out of your trip.

Lisbon to Óbidos by bus

Average price: €9 each way
Average time: Just over an hour each way
Convenience: 4.5/5
Where to book: Rome2Rio

The bus is definitely the best option from Lisbon to Óbidos when looking at public transit. It’s basically the same price as the train but you save over an hour each way. Which, if you’re doing a day trip from Lisbon, saves you a bunch of time!

Another nice thing about taking the bus from Lisbon to Óbidos is that you don’t have to plan too far in advance. Buses run every 45 minutes between the two cities. So if you wake up late or feel a little tired just make that coffee and catch the next bus.

The bus station is also easy to access in Lisbon and close to the metro line so no matter where you’re staying in Lisbon you can easily get to the bus station.

Lisbon to Óbidos by rental car

Average price: Anywhere from €10-45 a day + gas
Average time: Just over an hour each way
Convenience: 3.5/5
Where to book: Rentalcars.com

The price for public transport is so cheap in Portugal that we really favour the bus and train over renting a car (especially for this trip). Especially since you have to pay for parking in Óbidos and it’s €1/hour.

So with all that being said, we wouldn’t suggest renting a car unless you already have it rented or are travelling around Portugal for a longer trip. Of course, there are benefits to having the rental such as not having to wait for public transport and being able to stop along the way. Also, parking in Óbidos is really easy.

If you do rent a car though, we recommend exploring Rentalcars.com and then picking it up from the Lisbon Airport since that’s usually the cheapest option. We like using Rentalcars.com because it compares the different rental companies and shows you the cheapest and best options! It’s always nice to save a bit of money! 🙂

Another good tip is that the further you book the car rental in advance the more likely you are to get a better discount! Since most car companies run on supply and demand the further you book in advance the more supply they’ll have for the most part. There are always exceptions though for example if you come during a holiday weekend or a busy time of year – then the prices will be higher.

Portugal is super camping friendly and there are a ton of great campsites around the country. The campsite in Óbidos was actually one of our favourite ones we stayed at!

If you pick up your campervan in Lisbon you can drive directly to Óbidos in just over an hour, or you can make some stops along the way like in Sintra and Ericeira (like we did) before you make your way up to Óbidos.

Of course, if you’re doing just a day trip from Lisbon to Óbidos then this isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for a longer period of time then renting a campervan might be the best option.
