It’s no secret that Sri Lanka has some incredible surfing (especially along the south coast), so it’s probably no surprise that there are a ton of good surf camps in Sri Lanka as well!
After spending almost 3 weeks surfing in one of the coolest places in the world, we tested out a few different places and learned from friends and locals which surf camps are the best of the best.
In this post, we’ve put together a list of some of the best surf camps in Sri Lanka based on our personal experience and recommendations.
The majority of the surf camps in Sri Lanka are located on the south coast since that is where the best surfing is located.
Whether you’re looking to improve your surf level or just enjoy time with awesome people in a beautiful country we’ve got you covered.

5 of the best surf camps in Sri Lanka
As we mentioned, the majority of these surf camps are located on the south coast of Sri Lanka – from Ahangama to Hiriketiya – but all of them have something unique to offer.
Some of the surf camps in Sri Lanka focus a lot on the surfing whereas some are more focused on the community aspect. Some include a lot of yoga while others include a lot of partying.
We personally like to have a combination of good surf and good community, so we try to pick a place that seems like a happy medium between the two.
Regardless of which camp you go to, you’ll get to experience the beauty of the Pearl of the Indian Ocean (Sri Lanka’s nickname) where you’ll get to try amazing food, meet the friendliest people, and (of course) enjoy some epic surfing!
From the beaches to the surf, it’s one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been to and the sunsets from the beach are out of this world!

#1 Lapoint Surf Camp Sri Lanka (MUST VISIT)
💰 Price per week: €620 for stay-only / €979 for stay & surf
📍 Location: Kabalana Beach, Sri Lanka (5-minute drive from Ahangama)
⭐️ Surf level: Level 1-3
🌿 Community aspect: Amazing!
👉🏼 Check out Lapoint Sri Lanka’s prices & availability here
We’ve stayed at multiple Lapoint Camps around the world, and we love their camps! Lapoint offers a great balance between surf and community and that’s why we think it’s the best surf camp in Sri Lanka.
At Lapoint, you get 5 surf lessons a week (with lay days usually on Mondays and Fridays) and you’ll have the chance to go on your own whenever you want outside of the surf lessons – we did it a few times in the afternoons and for sunset surf (which was epic).
We personally found the 5 sessions a week enough – especially with all the social activities, yoga, day trips, and other things going on.
Lapoint is definitely on the higher end and a bit more boutique and luxurious than some of the other camps so you do pay a bit more for this one than some of the other places but it’s totally worth it in our opinion.
The schedule at Lapoint Sri Lanka is pretty full on but you can pick and choose what you want to attend – and if you want to just hang out by the pool and enjoy a nice cold drink and the Sri Lanka sunshine you can totally just do that.
It’s great you can also choose between just the stay package or the surf and stay based on what you’re looking for.
When you stay at Lapoint, you usually book it a week at a time and the surf camp always starts on Mondays.
We decided to stay for 2 weeks and that was such a good decision. A week flies by so fast and about 20-25% of the people we did the camp with stayed for 2 weeks instead of 1 so you get to become really close with those people.
We’re not kidding when we say the weeks we spend at Lapoint are usually some of the highlights of our year.
Another thing we really like about Lapoint Sri Lanka is that, even though power cuts are common in Sri Lanka, there’s a generator at Lapoint to make sure there’s always electricity, wifi, lights, etc. This was great because we actually had to get some work done while we were at the camp.
What’s included in the full package:
- Rides to and from surf
- Surfboard rental
- 5 surf lessons a week
- Surf theory before and after the lesson (level 1)
- Video analysis (level 3 only)
- 7 buffet breakfasts
- 5 buffet dinners
- Social activities and events (pool party, beach clean, movie night, and more)
- Air-conditioned rooms
What’s not included in the full package:
- Shuttle or transport from the airport to the camp
- Leggings to protect from surfboard rashes
- Zinc to protect your face from the sun
- All lunches & 2 dinners are not included
- Day trips to Ella, Udawalawe National Park, etc
- Drinks and alcohol at the camp
All of these can be purchased through the camp (airport shuttle to the camp has to be pre-booked).
You can read all about our stay at Lapoint Sri Lanka here where we dive more into details about our experience and what you can expect if you decide to go there too.
It seriously is the best time and we’d recommend it to anyone since the surfing levels range from complete beginners to advanced surfers.
Most people who attend Lapoint usually come for the surf and stay and stay between 1-2 weeks!
We personally think two weeks is perfect since it gives you enough time to do and see everything.
Especially if you’re coming from Europe you really want to see all the highlights of Sri Lanka while also being able to surf and enjoy the camp!

📍 Location: Weligama, Sri Lanka (50 meters from the beach)
⭐️ Surf level: All levels
🌿 Community aspect: Small 6 rooms surf camp in Sri Lanka

This charming 6-bedroom surf camp is quite famous because it’s owned by none other than Lucky! Yes, he named the place after himself! 🙂
Why is it famous? Because Lucky is currently Sri Lanka’s most famous surfer (also the best). He’s won multiple championships here in Sri Lanka and he’ll be there to greet you when you come to the camp.
If you put in a request in advance, Lucky can also be your surf coach during your stay. With over 6+ years of experience, he’s able to teach and help almost anyone.
Just because he’s a pro that doesn’t mean you have to be a pro to stay at the camp. Lucky’s Surf Camp in Sri Lanka welcomes all surf levels!
Lucky’s Surf Camp is definitely a bit more laid back and less community-focused than say Lapoint since there are only 6 rooms and can accommodate up to 12 guests!
But it’s a great place to focus on surfing and then you can relax in your free time with a small group of people.
The camp is located right in Weligama, one of the most popular surf spots in Sri Lanka. With palm-fringed coastline and ocean room views from the camp, it’s a great place for surfing & relaxing where you’ll guaranteed enjoy every moment.
What’s included in your stay:
- 7 buffet breakfasts
- Air-conditioned rooms
What’s not included in your stay:
- Shuttle or transport from the airport to the camp
- Leggings to protect from surfboard rashes
- Zinc to protect your face from the sun
- All lunches & dinners
- Surfboard
- Surf lessons
- Surf theory before and after the lesson
You can learn more about Lucky’s Surf Camp here where you’ll get more information about the surf camp, information about Lucky, and what you can expect at this chill surf camp in Weligama.
At Lucky’s, you overlap with people and it’s not like other surf camps that run Sunday to Sunday or Monday to Monday. Just find the dates that work for you and stay as long as you wish.

#3 Elsewhere Surf Camp Sri Lanka
💰 Price per week: €680 a week and up
📍 Location: Weligama, Sri Lanka (50 meters from the beach)
⭐️ Surf level: Level 1-3
🌿 Community aspect: Great community vibe
👉🏼 Check out Elsewhere Surf Camp’s prices & availability here
‘Elsewhere’ is another surf camp located in Weligama (very close to Lucky’s place). The reason for this location is simply because some of the best surfing in Sri Lanka is down in this area – so lots of surf camps are around here.
This is another surf camp that offers a great balance of surf and community! From morning to evening, you’ll always be busy (in a good way) with things to do.
This is also a fun party surf camp as its extended name might indicate “Surf & Party Weligama“!
From surfing in the morning to sipping on a fresh coconut in the afternoon to some partying with the other guests later in the day there’s always fun stuff going on at Elsewhere.
It’s a great camp if you’re a solo traveller because you’re bound to meet people and make friends! The camp is very much a social camp and even though it’s super laid back there are always events going on to make you have the best time while you’re surfing in Sri Lanka!
Location wise it couldn’t be any better! You’ll have the chance to surf with your coach every day and then even go out on your own if you’re still feeling it since some of the surf spots are only a few minutes walk from the camp.
We personally prefer Ahangama over Weligama but this place is literally right next to the surf so that is super convenient.
What’s included in the full package:
- Rides to and from surf
- 14 surf lessons
- Surfboard rental
- Surf theory before and after the lesson
- 7 buffet breakfasts
- 7 smoothies or coconuts
- 7 buffet dinners
- Gym access
- Yoga classes
- Elsewhere t-shirt
What’s not included in the package:
- Shuttle or transport from the airport to the camp
- Leggings to protect from surfboard rashes
- Zinc to protect your face from the sun
- All lunches
- Day trips to Ella, Udawalawe National Park, etc
- Drinks and alcohol at the camp
You can dive a little deeper into what you can expect at Elsewhere Surf Camp Sri Lanka here.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again if you have the chance to stay two weeks in Sri Lanka then do it! There’s so much to see and do in Sri Lanka and if you’re also going to be surfing a bunch you want to make sure you have enough time to do it all.

📍 Location: Ahangama, Sri Lanka (50 meters from the beach)
⭐️ Surf level: Level 1-3
🌿 Community aspect: Great community vibe

Dreamsea is another one of those amazing surf camps in Sri Lanka that has a bit of everything – from surf to community to day trips around the country.
Something we really like about Dreamsea is that you have the option to choose between a week-long package where everything is included or you can simply just book your stay and add things like surf, food, and day trips as you please.
The stay-only package is good if you have to work a bit or prefer to have more time on your own.
The camp itself is awesome! It’s located right in Ahangama close to some of the best surf beaches in Sri Lanka!
We’d say one of the things that makes Dreamsea stand out is that it is a beachfront property which is awesome. You have a pool and then just on the other side of the property you have the Indian Ocean. Incredible!
What’s included in the full package:
- Rides to and from surf
- Surfboard rental
- 12 hours of surf lessons
- 3 hours of yoga

As we mentioned, there are plenty of other things you can add on as well such as day trips to Galle and excursions to one of the national parks in Sri Lanka.
If you feel like it’s not enough surfing you can always rent a board or pay for extra lessons and one of the instructors will take you out!
There’s also the option to just take it easy and hang out by the pool. Dreamsea is an awesome camp to hang out at and enjoy the stunning coastline that’s right outside your bedroom window.

📍 Location: Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka (200 meters from the beach)
⭐️ Surf level: Level 1-3
🌿 Community aspect: Awesome community vibe

Kima Surf Camp has two locations in Sri Lanka – one in Weligama and one in Hiriketiya. We’ve heard they’re both amazing but in this post, we want to highlight the one in Hiriketiya Beach as that’s the most famous one.
Kima’s other Sri Lanka camp is in the same area as the other camps above (Ahangama and Weligama), whereas the Kima Surf Camp in Hiriketiya is slightly more east and located in one of the most beautiful bays on the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
Hiriketiya Beach is absolutely stunning and a great place for beginners to intermediate surfers to ride some awesome breaks in Sri Lanka.
The camp itself has a very tropical vibe which couldn’t be more perfect for the setting where it’s located. You’re next to the ocean, inside a jungle, and surrounded by like-minded people. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Kima Surf Camps also focuses on a balanced approach between surf and community. You’ll have the chance to surf twice a day while also having tons of other things to do from yoga to day trips to Galle.
It’s a great camp to visit if you’re looking for a bit of luxury mixed with Sri Lankan tradition. You get the perfect balance. This surf camp in Sri Lanka is absolutely worth visiting!
Kima Surf Camp works a bit like a hostel in the sense that you can book whichever dates you like – not just a full week like most other surf camps.
This is what’s included in your stay (numbers are per 7 days):
What’s included in the stay:
- Rides to and from surf
- Surf theory
- 12 hours of surf lesson
- Kima t-shirt
- Yoga sessions daily
- 7 x breakfast buffet
- 5 x dinner buffet
- Tea and coffee all day
What’s not included in the stay:
- Shuttle or transport from the airport to the camp
- Surfboard rental
- Leggings to protect from surfboard rashes
- Zinc to protect your face from the sun
- All lunches & 2 dinners
- Drinks and alcohol at the camp
You can find more information about Kima Surf Camps in Sri Lanka here where you can also check out their other location in Weligama.
Personally, we’d do a minimum week-long stay to get the full surf camp experience. Especially with the amount of surfing and activities available. One week absolutely flies by!
It’s a great place to go if you want to be surrounded by like-minded people and also practice your surfing. From beginners to intermediate, Kima caters to everyone and makes for an awesome time here in Sri Lanka.

Final thoughts on the best surf camps in Sri Lanka
As you can see, there are some amazing surf camps on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. There’s a reason for that because Weligama, Midigama, Ahangama, and Hiriketiya have some of the best surfing in the entire country and the breaks range from beginners to advanced.
So that’s where the surf camps get built and it’s also a beautiful part of the island so it’s perfect. The palm tree coastline with stunning beaches and good surf makes for the perfect trip.
We might be slightly biased when it comes to surf camps because of the experiences we’ve had but if you are looking for both great surf and an amazing community then Lapoint Sri Lanka is our personal favourite and the camp to go to.
