Santana is a more historic and quiet part of the island. It’s the perfect place if you want to immerse yourself in nature and be away from all the crowds of tourists you’ll find in Funchal. Don’t get us wrong we love Funchal and spend most of our time there but it is nice to get out to the north side of the island and spend some time in quieter and more peaceful parts of the island like Santana.
In and around Satana you’ll find some of the most unique stays on the island. We really love this area because it has an amazing coastline, is close to some of the best walks and Levada trails, and is very connected to the Madeiran traditions.

Quinta Do Furao is located on the outskirts of Santana on the northeast coast of the island. The hotel is on one of the most beautiful plots of land on the island. A vineyard goes through the yard and right at the edge of the property, you will see incredibly beautiful cliffs that go down to the ocean.
At Quinta Do Furao you definitely feel the glamour and beauty of the hotel but it still feels authentic and Madeiran. Even though there are so many walks and levada trails near the hotel you don’t even feel like leaving because of all the amenities that are on site.
Especially once you see the swimming pool there’s a good chance you won’t leave! Located in between the grapevines you have an amazing view of the coast and also a view of Vereda do Larano (which is a beautiful coastal hike in Madeira).

Casa da Tia Clementina is located in the heart of the Santana countryside which has some of the most beautiful nature on the island. From the hotel, you have views of the typical Santana homes and forest.
This home has been refurbished into a cozy and fairly inexpensive hotel. For the price and what’s included you really can’t go wrong with Casa da Tia.
In a way, it feels like a really cozy and well-furnished farmhouse where you can enjoy a nice coffee while reading a book in the living room. There’s also a billiards table and games for the evening when the sun sets over the island!
If you’re looking for somewhere close to hiking trails then you’re in the right place too. You have the famous Pico Ruivo a short drive away and some smaller levada trails within walking distance from the hotel.

This is the first hotel in Santana we recommend that is actually in the city center. When we say city center it’s really just a small rural city in northern Madeira. But it is in the center – and it’s within walking distance of local restaurants like Serra e Mar and Bragados Santana.
Hotel O Colmo is great if you want to experience the north side of the island and see the traditional side of Madeira. Of course, you can see bits and pieces of it all over the island but Santana is a little more authentic and traditional than the busier parts of the island.
This hotel is a little remote, beautiful, and close to nature which is perfect if you’re looking to get away from everything for a while! Since it’s in the heart of Santana you still have everything in the city nearby.

From Casa do Ribeiro Frio you have some of the most beautiful nature on the island packed with a bunch of amazing walking and hiking trails. You can for example find two of the PRs here (PR stands for recommended trail) including PR10 (Levada do Furado to Levada Portela) and PR 11.
